Utility Cut & Trench Restoration in Toronto

After a water service replacement, a sewer repair, a gas or hydro connection or an EV charger conduit, there is a trench through your driveway, walkway, garage floor or basement slab. We restore the cut on your side of the property line so it does not settle, crack or show, and we explain plainly who restores the cut in the street and the sidewalk, because that one is not yours.

  • WSIB covered
  • $5M liability
  • Written warranty
  • Condition Report

The utility restores the road cut; the driveway cut is yours to fix.

A service connection runs from the main in the street, under the sidewalk and boulevard, across your property and into the building. When it is dug up, the trench crosses two owners. The cut in the roadway, the sidewalk and the boulevard is made under a City Utility Cut Permit; the utility that made it is responsible for restoring the City’s infrastructure to the City’s standard, usually with a temporary asphalt patch first and permanent restoration later, and the City inspects the result. A resident left with a sunken patch out front reports it to 311, not to a contractor.

The trench on your side of the line is a different matter. The utility or the plumber backfills it and leaves, and what you have is a strip of disturbed ground through a driveway, a walkway or a slab that will settle for the next two winters. Restoring it properly is ordinary concrete work done carefully: the backfill compacted in lifts so it cannot drop, the slab rebuilt to the thickness and reinforcement of the concrete around it, the joints re-established and the finish matched, so the repair is a line you have to look for rather than a dip you drive through.

A floor slab cut out, rebuilt and cordoned off to cure in an operating facility

Backfill that stays put, a slab that matches, a finish you have to look for.

Driveway and walkway trenches

Cut back to sound, square edges, the backfill replaced or compacted in lifts, and the slab repoured to match the thickness, finish and slope of the concrete around it, with the joints put back where they were.

Garage floor and basement slab cuts

After sewer, drain or sump work: the trench backfilled and compacted, the moisture details the slab had reinstated, and the slab rebuilt flush so a coating or a polish can go over the whole floor.

Settled patches

A cut that was filled a year ago and has sunk since, dug out, the loose fill dealt with, and rebuilt on a compacted base so it stays level.

Asphalt-to-concrete transitions

Where a trench crosses from an asphalt drive to a concrete apron or walkway, the joint detailed so the two materials do not separate at the line.

EV charger and service conduits

Trenches for new electrical runs across a driveway or walkway, coordinated with the electrician so the conduit is in and inspected before the concrete goes back.

Finish matching

Broom texture, colour and joint layout matched to the surrounding slab as closely as a new pour against an old one allows, and our advice to resurface the whole slab where a uniform look matters.

Backfill settles unless it is made not to.

Soil that has been dug out and thrown back in occupies more volume than it did before, and it compacts over time under its own weight, water and traffic. Left to itself a trench can keep dropping for two or three years. The only way to stop that is to compact the backfill in thin lifts with the right equipment, or to replace it with granular material that compacts properly, before the concrete goes on. A patch poured over loose backfill is a bridge that fails when the ground under it leaves, which is why the first question about any sunken repair is what is under it, not what is on top.

The slab itself has to match what it joins. A driveway panel of a given thickness with steel in it cannot be patched with a thinner, unreinforced strip and expected to carry the same wheel loads. We measure the existing slab at the cut and rebuild to it, tie into the adjoining concrete where the design calls for it, and put joints back where the original had them so the new strip moves with the old.

A restoration that will not show in two years

Below

  • Backfill compacted in lifts or replaced with granular
  • Cause of any settlement corrected
  • Base matched to the adjoining slab

Above

  • Thickness and reinforcement matched
  • Joints re-established, edges square
  • Finish, slope and colour matched

What to do about the sunken patch in the road or the sidewalk.

Report it. Cuts in the roadway and sidewalk are permitted and restored under the City’s utility cut process, and the City inspects the permanent restoration against its specification, TS 4.60. If the temporary patch has sunk or the permanent restoration has not happened, a 311 service request is the route, and it costs you nothing. A private contractor does not restore a City cut without the City’s permit, and you should not pay one to. Where a trench runs from the street onto your property, we restore the private side and tell you exactly where the City’s responsibility starts.

A fixed price, in writing.

Trench restoration is priced to the trench after we have seen it: its length and width, the thickness and reinforcement of the slab it crosses, how much backfill has to come out, and whether it crosses a driveway, a walkway or an interior floor. Reporting the City-side cut through 311 costs you nothing; the City’s permit fees for cuts in its roads apply to whoever holds the permit and are set by the City. The published GTA market ranges for the concrete work itself, repair and new flatwork, are on the cost page with their sources.

Utility cut questions

The utility that made the cut, under the City’s Utility Cut Permit, to the City’s specification, with the City inspecting the permanent restoration. You do not pay for it and you do not hire anyone for it. The trench on your own property, from the property line to the house, is yours, and that is the part we restore.

I contacted Concrete Repair Plus a few weeks ago to tear-out and repour a concrete porch and steps leading up to the front of my house in North York. I contacted them after having an awful experience with a previous concrete contractor who took my deposit and strung me around for over a month, never to return. The level of care and respect I received from Concrete Repair Plus was incredible. After explaining the situation I was in, they sent me Nick and his crew (Jeremy and Milton) and told me I would be in good hands; they were absolutely right. Nick was so respectful; always taking the time to ensure he messaged me exactly when he was coming and what he'd be doing. He had a vision for how this job would look and made sure to include me in the planning of it come time for the formwork. Watching Nick work with Milton and Jeremy was really something. They paid attention to small details: perfect corners on the steps, a gentle slope to drain water away from the house, the first step that meets the driveway was deep enough to be paved around properly, the really nice full broom finish. The form work was done so meticulously, ensuring that the final product would be perfect. Milton and Jeremy always cleaned up at the end of every day, leaving the site looking better than when they arrived. And they were just such nice guys too. What more could I ask for? It's now been a couple of weeks since the job was finished and it looks fantastic. I couldn't be happier with the result! I'm looking forward to contacting them again for any future projects.

Huge shout out to this company. Our concrete porch was showing significant wear and tear and we wanted to take action before a total rebuild would have been required. The team at Concrete Repair Plus was extremely patient, came to the house several times to provide a quote and share Graniflex samples, did fantastic work and (bonus) actually refused payment until every last touch up was complete on our newly finished porch (which looks amazing, BTW). We had spoken to other repair companies but did not love that they used "in-house" epoxy porch repair coatings for which we could not find industry info / reviews. Very happy we chose Concrete Repair Plus to refinish our porch with the Graniflex system, a well-known and very well reviewed product. Thank you!

We had our over 50 year old concrete garage pad removed and replaced by Concrete Repair Plus at our North York, Ontario home. Our old concrete floor had deteriorated and had potholes, and it was too far gone to just resurface. The crew came on time, worked hard all day and completed the job in a timely, thorough and professional manner. They obviously took great pride in their work and showed care and attention to detail. They made sure all our concerns were addressed and resolved. We had them apply an epoxy coating a month later when the concrete had cured, and our garage now looks fantastic! We highly recommend Concrete Repair Plus for reasonable pricing, and for exceptional quality of work.

I recently had Concrete Repair Plus at my residence in Whitby to remove and replace the 66 year old garage floor. It was explained to me that it was not a good idea to grind and epoxy the floor but complete replacement was the way to go. The price was reasonable and the advice was excellent. Staff were on site had the floor removed and repoured the same day. The driveway was covered to prevent concrete spills/splashes. Saw cuts were completed next day. We are now in the process of covering the walls to clean it up. Definitely a five out of five and I would recommend you reach out for a quotation.

I had these guys out to my property in Bowmanville to do a complete garage floor replacement, and boy am I glad I did. They did an excellent job on the entire project and after one little hiccup they went WELL above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with the final product. My polished concrete floor looks amazing. Never realized how much better polished concrete can look versus epoxy. I wouldn't hesitate to use Concrete Repair Plus if I ever have another concrete project again

We redid our porch and the process was seemless from asking for a quote, to scheduling the work, and then the work itself. The workers were friendly and knowledgeable so made the whole process easy for us. Reasonably priced compared to others we compared to and very happy with the final product. Would use them again!
