Pool deck resurfacingin Toronto & Scarborough

Your deck does not need to be torn out. We grind the failed coating off, repair the concrete underneath, and rebuild the surface in a polyaspartic flake system, UV-stable, slip-resistant, and built for pool water, bare feet and Ontario freeze-thaw.

The short answer

What pool deck resurfacing actually is.

Pool deck resurfacing rebuilds the surface of the concrete deck you already have instead of tearing it out. On a Toronto-area deck that usually means diamond-grinding the failed coating, paint or sealer back to sound concrete, repairing the cracks and spalled edges underneath, then building a new bonded finish on top, most often a polyaspartic flake system. You keep your existing coping, layout and pool, nothing is excavated beside the pool shell, and the deck is back in use in days rather than the weeks a full replacement takes.

Is your deck a candidate?

What your deck is doing, and what it means.

Pool decks fail in a handful of recognizable ways, and the right fix is different for each. Find yours below, then book an assessment and we will confirm it on site rather than over the phone.

Symptom

Coating lifting or peeling off in sheets

What is happening

The last coating was rolled onto a smooth or sealed deck instead of a mechanically ground one, so it never keyed into the concrete.

What it needs

Full strip and rebuild. This is the most common deck we get called to.

Symptom

Surface rough and pitted, losing its top layer

What is happening

Spalling. Freeze-thaw and pool chemistry have worked into the surface paste and it is breaking away.

What it needs

Grind, rebuild the spalled areas, then coat.

Symptom

Fine map-like hairline cracking

What is happening

Shrinkage from the original pour. Cosmetic, not structural.

What it needs

Filled and coated over. These do not come back through a properly built system.

Symptom

One wide crack, or slabs sitting at different heights

What is happening

Movement, settlement or a structural crack, not a surface problem.

What it needs

Levelling or a structural repair first. A coating over a moving crack will telegraph and split.

Symptom

Slippery every time it is wet

What is happening

A smooth trowel finish, or a film-forming sealer with no texture in it.

What it needs

A flake broadcast, which leaves a profiled surface with grip underfoot.

Symptom

Too hot to stand on barefoot in July

What is happening

A dark, dense, smooth surface soaking up sun and holding it.

What it needs

A lighter flake blend, it reflects more than dark concrete or dark pavers.

Symptom

Concrete crumbling at the coping or the pool edge

What is happening

Water getting in behind the coping and into the edge of the deck.

What it needs

Edge repair before anything is coated, or the new finish fails from the edge inward.

A documented job · Scarborough

The coating had given up. The concrete had not.

The finish around this Scarborough pool was lifting and flaking off in patches across the whole deck. The slab underneath was sound, so instead of tearing it out, we ground the old coating back to bare concrete, repaired the damage it had been hiding, and rebuilt the surface in a full-flake polyaspartic system.

How we do it

Five stages, and the second one is the whole job.

Nearly every failed pool deck coating we grind off failed for the same reason: it was applied over a surface that was never mechanically prepared. Preparation is most of the labour on a proper resurfacing job, and it is what you are actually paying for.

  1. 1of 5

Assess the deck, not just the coating

We check what is still bonded and what is loose, read the cracks, look at the coping, and test the concrete. If the slab has a movement problem, coating it is the wrong answer and we will tell you that.

  2. 2of 5

    Grind back to sound concrete

Diamond grinders on dust extraction take the old coating, paint or sealer off and open a proper profile in the concrete. This is the step cheap jobs skip, and it is exactly why cheap jobs peel.

  3. 3of 5

    Repair the concrete underneath

Cracks routed and filled, spalled areas and edges rebuilt, control joints treated. Everything gets fixed while the deck is open. It is the only time it is easy.

  4. 4of 5

    Base coat and flake broadcast

A bonded base coat goes down and decorative flake is broadcast into it to refusal, then scraped back flat. The flake sets the colour, the depth and the grip.

  5. 5of 5

    Polyaspartic topcoat

A UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat locks the flake in and takes the wear. It holds its colour in direct sun and returns to service fast, which is what an outdoor deck actually needs.

Choosing a finish

Why polyaspartic flake, and not the alternatives.

A pool deck is one of the hardest surfaces a coating can live on: full sun, standing water, chlorine or salt, sunscreen, bare feet, and a Toronto winter at the end of it. Here is how the realistic options compare on the things that actually matter.

Polyaspartic flake: Costs more than paint. It is a built system, not a coat.

Epoxy on its own: Not made for direct UV. It belongs on an indoor floor.

Acrylic deck paint or sealer: Cheapest and shortest-lived, usually the coating we are grinding off.

Stamped or spray-texture overlay: We install these too, but around a pool the texture holds dirt and a rigid layer suffers, so we rarely recommend one here.

Tear out and repour: Excavation right beside the pool shell, the most disruptive and expensive route.

Scheduling

When to book it around your season.

A pool deck is the one surface with a calendar attached to it. We work to yours.

  • Spring, before the pool opens. The deck is empty, and the finish is cured and ready for the season.
  • After Labour Day, once the pool closes, the most comfortable working temperatures of the year.
  • Mid-season is possible on a covered pool, but it takes the deck out of use for the days it runs.
  • The deck has to be dry and the forecast has to hold, so we book around weather rather than through it.
  • Polyaspartic cures across a wider temperature range than epoxy, which keeps the shoulder seasons genuinely workable here.

What it costs

Priced after we have seen it.

Published GTA figures put pool deck resurfacing at roughly $15 per square foot, against around $30 per square foot to tear out and replace the same deck, resurfacing typically runs 40–60% below replacement because there is no demolition, disposal or new pour. Treat those as market anchors for sanity-checking quotes, including ours: we price each deck after the assessment, in writing and itemized. What moves the number:

  • The size and shape of the deck, curves, steps and raised bond beams take longer than a rectangle.
  • How much of the old coating is still bonded, versus how much has to be ground off.
  • Concrete repair found underneath once the surface comes off.
  • The condition of the coping and the pool edge.
  • Access to the back yard for equipment, a gate versus a walk-around.
  • The flake blend and the topcoat you choose.

FAQ

Pool deck resurfacing, answered

In most cases yes. If the slab is structurally sound (no settlement, no wide moving cracks) the surface can be ground off and rebuilt in place. That keeps your coping and layout, avoids excavation beside the pool shell, and costs considerably less than demolition and a repour. Where the slab has actually moved or broken up, we will tell you that resurfacing is the wrong answer rather than coat over a problem.

Huge shout out to this company. Our concrete porch was showing significant wear and tear and we wanted to take action before a total rebuild would have been required. The team at Concrete Repair Plus was extremely patient, came to the house several times to provide a quote and share Graniflex samples, did fantastic work and (bonus) actually refused payment until every last touch up was complete on our newly finished porch (which looks amazing, BTW). We had spoken to other repair companies but did not love that they used "in-house" epoxy porch repair coatings for which we could not find industry info / reviews. Very happy we chose Concrete Repair Plus to refinish our porch with the Graniflex system, a well-known and very well reviewed product. Thank you!

Excellent experience with Concrete Repair Plus! They removed the old concrete jewel stone finish from our porch and applied a Graniflex System, and the results look fantastic. The crew was professional, efficient, and paid great attention to detail. They took great care to remove and reinstall the existing railing, protect the surrounding property, and cleaned everything up when the job was finished. I highly recommend Concrete Repair Plus and will definitely call on them again - Scarborough, ON

We redid our porch and the process was seemless from asking for a quote, to scheduling the work, and then the work itself. The workers were friendly and knowledgeable so made the whole process easy for us. Reasonably priced compared to others we compared to and very happy with the final product. Would use them again!

I contacted Concrete Repair Plus a few weeks ago to tear-out and repour a concrete porch and steps leading up to the front of my house in North York. I contacted them after having an awful experience with a previous concrete contractor who took my deposit and strung me around for over a month, never to return. The level of care and respect I received from Concrete Repair Plus was incredible. After explaining the situation I was in, they sent me Nick and his crew (Jeremy and Milton) and told me I would be in good hands; they were absolutely right. Nick was so respectful; always taking the time to ensure he messaged me exactly when he was coming and what he'd be doing. He had a vision for how this job would look and made sure to include me in the planning of it come time for the formwork. Watching Nick work with Milton and Jeremy was really something. They paid attention to small details: perfect corners on the steps, a gentle slope to drain water away from the house, the first step that meets the driveway was deep enough to be paved around properly, the really nice full broom finish. The form work was done so meticulously, ensuring that the final product would be perfect. Milton and Jeremy always cleaned up at the end of every day, leaving the site looking better than when they arrived. And they were just such nice guys too. What more could I ask for? It's now been a couple of weeks since the job was finished and it looks fantastic. I couldn't be happier with the result! I'm looking forward to contacting them again for any future projects.

I recently had Concrete Repair Plus at my residence in Whitby to remove and replace the 66 year old garage floor. It was explained to me that it was not a good idea to grind and epoxy the floor but complete replacement was the way to go. The price was reasonable and the advice was excellent. Staff were on site had the floor removed and repoured the same day. The driveway was covered to prevent concrete spills/splashes. Saw cuts were completed next day. We are now in the process of covering the walls to clean it up. Definitely a five out of five and I would recommend you reach out for a quotation.

We have owned our home for over 40 years and needed to change the garage floor. Last week Concrete Repair Plus removed the old garage floor and replaced it with a new one. The work was done in 2 days. Their team was professional and courteous, and the price was reasonable. We give them 5 stars. R. Fawcett Mississauga July 2026

I had these guys out to my property in Bowmanville to do a complete garage floor replacement, and boy am I glad I did. They did an excellent job on the entire project and after one little hiccup they went WELL above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with the final product. My polished concrete floor looks amazing. Never realized how much better polished concrete can look versus epoxy. I wouldn't hesitate to use Concrete Repair Plus if I ever have another concrete project again
